Study & Work in UK

With hundreds of years of excellence in the education sector, the UK is EBLA’s second most preferred study destination for international students. More than 650,000 international students (in higher education) enroll each year in the UK, a country known for its world-class education, diversity, and bustling student communities.
In recent years, the UK has also announced significant incentives to attract international students such as visa changes and work-study opportunities.

Why do students choose UK as a destination?

The UK is considered to be the most prestigious study abroad destination for international students as it’s been offering quality education for centuries. The UK universities provide excellent educational infrastructure and advanced and practical teaching methodology which make it an amazing place to study.

There are outstanding job opportunities after graduation. International students studying Bachelor and or Master programmes are able to stay for two more years after graduation, while international doctorate students can stay for up to three years.

Starting in 2024, the UK Government announced to remove the right for international students to bring dependents unless they are attending postgraduate research programmes. However, there is no limit to the number of international students who can stay in the UK upon completion of their course of study. In order to work in the UK after completing your studies you would switch to the Post Study Work Visa through which you can work for any employer.

This makes it easier for new professionals to settle and begin their careers in the UK.

Good Quality Education (2)

If you have ever wondered how UK universities maintain the highest standards, the reasons are grounded in its Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) which is an independent body in the United Kingdom with the task to regularly assess the education standards of all universities and colleges located in the country. This independent body checks every university’s performance through a series of audits and subject reviews and helps educational institutions to point out the best education practices, sending detailed feedback to institutions for improvement.

UK higher education funding bodies also examine their studies and publish their research and report regularly. This ensures that no matter what subject a student chooses to study in the UK they will get the best quality of learning experience in the UK.

Shorter Duration of Courses
(4)

Students in the UK can complete their courses  in less time in comparison to other countries which means that students can graduate sooner without actually compromising on education quality.  This saves time and significant tuition and living expense costs.

Students can Work while they Learn
(5)

In the UK, international students are allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours during their term, and they can work full-time during holidays and breaks. International students are found to be working in companies, non-governmental organizations and educational institutions themselves  This helps students to be a part of a new culture, interact with the locals, earn local experience, learn new skills, plus they can use this income to support their stay in the UK or pay for the tuition fees.

Medical Treatment while Studying
(6)

Medical treatment is an important issue for international students as they travel to a foreign land, and  when it comes to the UK, they get free access to excellent medical treatment during their studies with the help of the National Health Service (NHS). International Students need only to pay a small International Health Surcharge (IHS).

Variety of Courses and Degrees
(7)

The UK educational institutions offer a wide variety of courses and degrees – from law, engineering and medicine to filmmaking, business and finance. Students learn what they want to excel in the career of their choice.

(9)

The United Kingdom is a multicultural country that welcomes international students from abroad with open arms. When international students study in the UK, they get a chance to experience authentic  British culture, their food, their activities, and their way of living.

According to the new Graduate Immigration Route visa rules now International Students are now allowed to stay back in the UK for 2 more years after completing their full-time degree in the UK Institutions. Can you work and study in the UK at the same time?

If you intend to work and study while pursuing higher education in the UK, you’ll be pleased to know that the government supports this. As a result, employers are also open to hiring foreign students for part-time jobs as well as course-related jobs. However, as with every country, there are certain rules you should abide by in while working on a student visa.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you should know before you work and study in the UK on a “Tier 4” student visa. For example only students enrolled in full-time degree courses are eligible for employment and students applying for further education colleges on a short-term visa may not work while studying.

Students may work 20 hours per week

International students in the UK who are above the age of 16 may work up to 20 hours a week during the term. You are allowed to work longer hours during vacation. Besides that, you may also work as a postgraduate doctor or dentist if you are enrolled in a recognised foundation programme; this is considered a trainee position.

As a COVID-19 concession, healthcare professionals may work longer hours — students employed in 18 NHS Trust positions may therefore work over 20 hours a week until Sept. 30, 2021, depending on the demands of the job. For all positions, you should be paid according to UK minimum wage.

According to the UK Council for International Student Affairs: “All conditions and limitations are printed out on your Tier 4 sticker (vignette) including the number of hours you can work per week during term time. When receiving your residence permit paperwork there will be a letter that will offer you all information, whether you can work or not while you’re studying.”

Self-employment is not allowed

While freelance jobs can be attractive in work-and-study arrangements, you should remember that the UK Tier 4 visa does not allow self-employment. You are only allowed to work in positions authorised by the state, which are detailed in your immigration documents. International students are also prohibited to work in professional sports (such as a coach or professional athlete) or as a private entertainer.

Immigration pathways

If you decide to immigrate into UK for study, business or work and as investor you have the opportunity to choose from the pathway immigration pathways offered from the UK government.

Bring your family to the UK while you study using a Student visa

Updated on 25 May 2023

You are able to apply to allow dependants, who are family or partners, to stay in the UK with the main Student visa holder during their studies

If your dependants are already in the UK

Proposed changes from January 2024

The UK government have announced changes regarding which students can bring dependants with them to the UK. They say these changes will affect students starting study from January 2024 onwards.

Full details are not yet available however we will update our pages once we have further information from the Home Office. Changes to student visa route will reduce net migration – gov.uk press release. The UK Government’s immigration policy places some restrictions and conditions on dependants. If you want to bring your family to the UK for the first time, you need to be:

  • studying at postgraduate level for nine months or more.
  • fully sponsored by your government for a programme of study longer than six months.
  • a Doctorate Extension Scheme student.

You or your dependants can apply outside the UK, either at the same time as you or separately.

Who is a dependant?

You can not bring other family members (parent, brother, sister or other relative).
Dependants can only be:

  • Your husband, wife your civil partner
  • Your unmarried or same-sex partner. You need to have been living together in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for a period of at least two years and provide evidence of this.
  • Child(ren) under 18 at the time of application. Both parents must be coming to the UK except in exceptional circumstances. If only one parent is applying to come to the UK, please speak to an International Student Adviser at the University because there are very limited exceptions to this requirement.
  • Child(ren) aged over 18 if permission to be in the UK already granted or as the child of a Tier 1, 2, 4 or 5 person
  • If your child(ren) is over 16 years when they apply, they will need to provide required documentation.

Civil partners

Civil Partner information states:

  • your unmarried or same-sex partner. You need to have been living together in a relationship similar to marriage or civil partnership for a period of at least two years and provide evidence of this.

In all cases, you must both be over 18 years when you receive your extension or when your dependant arrives in the UK.

If your dependants are already in the UK

You can include the details of your dependants when completing the online student visa extension application . Dependants should be given the same time of leave as the main applicant. All family members will be required to attend a visa centre to enrol their biometrics.

Switching to Dependant visa in the UK

It is possible to switch to a dependant visa from other types of immigration permission within the UK. This means, for example, you can apply as a dependant after having been in the UK with Student visa (formally Tier 4) leave, without having to leave the UK to apply for entry clearance. Those here on valid Dependant visas can now apply to switch to a student visa if they are accepted on a course of study with no more than 28 days between the visa expiry date and course start date.
